The BJP walks into Bhagwat’s footsteps, slams religious hate-mongers

The BJP’ s statement denouncing “insult to any religious personalities” has come in the wake of violence in Kanpur and other parts of Uttar Pradesh over the controversial comment of the spokesperson of the saffron outfit against Prophet Mohammad. The UP Government may have found links to PFI behind the violence, but there is a need to also book the person who triggered it. The BJP has rightly pointed out that India has been a melting pot of many religions and the Indian Constitution gives the right to every citizen to practise any religion of his/her choice. With States reporting cases of communal tension at frequent intervals, the ruling party of the Centre must take convincing steps to dispel the impressions that its cadres stoked such communal flames because religious polarisation electorally helped the BJP. At a time when the global opinion-makers have started raising fingers at the rising trend of communal violence in India, the BJP has tried to silence them by stating: “As India celebrates the 75th year of its Independence, we are committed to making India a great country where all are equal and everyone lives with dignity, where all are committed to India's unity and integrity, where all enjoy the fruits of growth and development.” The BJP’s firm stand on this sensitive issue of religious hate-mongering will soothe many nerves at a time when a lunatic fringe in the society has taken it upon itself to define the culture, civilisation and history of the nation.

The statement will encourage the law enforcement authorities to act against such religious zealots irrespective of the colour of their attire — saffron or green. Remember, six years at the height of the lynching spree across the country, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came out against these so-called gau rakshaks and said: “I get so angry at those who are into the gau rakshak business. A gau bhakt is different, gau seva is different. I have seen that some people are into crimes all night and wear the garb of gau rakshaks in the day.” The PM’s denouncement of such elements did check the frenzy in a big way. The BJP’s strong criticism of such elements has come days after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s targeted attack on those who were trying to rewrite the history of the nation by seeking to reclaim all temple lands where mosques were built by the Muslim invaders. Bhagwat’s statement has triggered a big debate. It has been welcomed by a large section of the society which feels that rather than fighting over temples and mosques, India should spend its energy in setting right its economy and executing its developmental plans. Now that the RSS and BJP have taken the lead, it is important for other political parties not to blindly support every person from the minority community even if he were a hardcore criminal, a dreaded terrorist or a religious bigot.
