Won’t resume talks with Pak, says Shah

Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday firmly ruled out holding any dialogue with Pakistan and declared that the Modi Government would not tolerate any form of terrorism.

Shah was speaking at a well-attended rally at Baramulla, the first by any Union Minister after the Abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

Reaching out to the local audience Shah announced that Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) will be conducted with “full transparency” once the Election Commission (EC) completed the exercise of publishing the revised electoral rolls.

Making a passionate appeal to the youth to shun the path of violence, Shah said terrorism has already claimed 42,000 lives in J&K since the 1990s and asked whether it has ever benefited anyone.

Launching a scathing attack on former J&K Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, the Union Home Minister also accused the ‘Gupkar alliance’ of “laying a red carpet” for Pakistani terrorists coming into the country. He blamed the families of the Abdullahs (National Conference), Muftis (People’s Democratic Party), and Nehru-Gandhi (Congress) for the lack of development in J&K saying they ruled the State for most of the period since the country’s Independence.

“Mufti and company, Abdullah and sons and the Congress have done nothing for the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, adding that their rule was marked by misgovernance, corruption and lack of development. The Home Minister also lashed out at those advocating dialogue with Pakistan.

“Some people say we should talk to Pakistan. Why should we talk to Pakistan? We will not talk. We will talk to the people of Baramulla, we will talk to the people of Kashmir,” he said.

Asserting that the Modi Government would go all out to wipe out terrorism, he said, “We want to make Jammu and Kashmir the most peaceful place in the country.”

Shah said some people often talk about Pakistan but he wanted to know how many villages in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have electricity connections.

“We have ensured in the last three years that all villages in Kashmir now have electricity connection.”

Lauding Prime Minister Modi for bringing investment into J&K, Shah said that the region which was known to be a “terrorist hotspot” has now become a “tourism hotspot.”

Shah came down heavily on the three political families for the second-consecutive day. He alleged that their rule was full of misgovernance, corruption, and lack of development. “Mufti and company, Abdullah and sons and the Congress have done nothing for the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He said that Rs 56,000 crore investment has come to Jammu and Kashmir in the last three years, which will give employment opportunities to five lakh people, while just Rs 17,000 crore investment had come since independence.

The Home Minister said the Modi government has given one lakh houses to the poor in Jammu and Kashmir.

He alleged that rampant corruption led to underdevelopment in Jammu and Kashmir and said the Modi government has ensured that every rupee being spent goes to those most deserving. Shah said due to the improved security situation, 22 lakhs tourists have visited Jammu and Kashmir this year so far.

Comparing the two models of governance Shah said, “There are two models. One of PM Modi which gives employment, peace, and brotherhood; and another is the Gupkar model which led to the Pulwama attack.

“PM Modi made a hospital in Pulwama at an expense of Rs 2,000 crore. The Gupkar model is laying the red carpet for the Pakistani terrorists into the country. The Gupkar model placed stones, closed colleges, and machine guns in the hands of the youth. The Modi model has IIM, IIT, AIIMS, NIFT, and NEET for the youth. The youth wants education Farooq Abdullah, not stones in their hands,” he said.
