15 MPs among 217 Congmen detained by cops on day 2 of Rahul’s grilling

Wednesday, 15 June 2022 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Delhi Police on Tuesday detained 217 Congress leaders and workers for violating prohibitory orders outside the heavily-barricaded party headquarters in the national Capital as their leader Rahul Gandhi was questioned by the financial probe agency, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the National Herald case for the second day running.

Ahead of his questioning by the ED on Tuesday, Gandhi joined senior party leaders and party MPs and workers on a "dharna" at the Congress headquarters, where the Chief Ministers of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh -- Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel and All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra -- were also present.

Some leaders, including MPs, were not even allowed to enter the AICC headquarters and 15 MPs were taken away in police vans to different police stations.

Lok Sabha MP Manickam Tagore said he and some other leaders, including PL Punia, were not allowed to enter the Akbar Road party office and were detained at the Mandir Marg Police Station.

Among the other leaders detained were Randeep Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, Gaurav Gogoi, Deepender Singh Hooda, Ranjeet Ranjan, Jeby Mather, Imran Pratapgarhi, Youth Congress chief BV Srinivas and National Students' Union of India (NSUI) chief Neeraj Kundan. Some of them were even roughed up by the police.

“Delhi Police and the Modi Government have crossed all limits when they brutally hit Congress leaders and workers in an unprovoked way.

The way MP Jebi Mather was dragged by male constables, the way she was beaten reflects the anti-women mindset of the Modi Government,” said Surjewala, after being released from Vasant Kunj Police Station, where he was kept after being detained. According to Dr Sagar Preet Hooda, the Special Commissioner of Police (law and order), police had detained 217 people including some senior functionaries of the Congress from the New Delhi district and sent to various police stations.

“They have been released now. Today also police had denied them permission to organise a gathering because Section 144 has been invoked,” said the Special CP.
