623 candidates in fray for first phase polls

Altogether 623 candidates are in the fray for 58 assembly seats in western Uttar Pradesh going to polls in the first phase where polling is scheduled on February 10.

On the last day of withdrawal of papers on Thursday, 35 candidates withdrew their nominations, Election Commission of India sources here said on Thursday.

    A total of 810 candidates had filed their nominations and papers of 152 were rejected during scrutiny.

In the first phase, the highest number of candidates (15 each) are in Mathura and Muzaffarnagar while there are 14 candidates each in Ghaziabad, Dadri, Bah and Etmadpur assembly constituencies.

The lowest of six candidates each are in the fray from Baraut and Baldev assembly seats.

Meanwhile, in the second phase of nominations for 55 seats where polling is scheduled on February 14, 412 nominations have been filed till now with 260 nominations filed on Thursday.

Friday is the last day for filling of nominations for the second phase polls.

In the third phase of nominations for 59 seats where polling will be held on February 20, now 42 papers have been filed so far with 41 filed on Thursday.

In the fourth phase of nominations which commenced on Thursday,14 candidates have filed their papers.
