Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has nominated Bhubaneswar BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi as the Indian candidate for the upcoming vacant position in the Executive Committee of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The vacancy is likely to be filled during the 145th Assembly of the IPU scheduled to be held in Kigali in Rwanda from October 11 to 15.
The IPU is an inter-parliamentary organisation with a membership of 178 Parliaments. The Indian Parliament has been a member of IPU since 1949. Various positions in the IPU bodies are filled up on the basis of geographical representation. India is a member of the Asia Pacific Geopolitical Group (APG).
As per IPU rules, Sarangi’s candidature is to be endorsed by the Geopolitical Group. The Ministry of External Affairs is endeavouring for the support of APG members for her.
Sarangi has thanked PM Narendra Modi and Speaker Birla for nominating her for the coveted post.
