Sunday, 14 August 2022 | Kumar Chellappan | WELLINGTON/Nilgiris

Nilgiris, the hilly district in Tamil Nadu, is more known for the bravery and gallantry of the soldiers of the Madras Regimental Centre at Wellington, one of the oldest Army establishments in the country. The Thambis (as the soldiers of MRC are addressed by local residents in reverence) are role models for the Kodava tribes that constitute the population as they are integrated with the district’s residents in all their happiness and sorrows.

Saturday was no different in Wellington as the locals made a beeline to the scenic Army Parade Ground as the top brass of the Regiment felicitated nearly 700 ex-servicemen, war widows   and veer naaris associated with the Nilgiri establishment.

The felicitation was organised as part of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, titled as “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotstav”. The picturesque parade ground was dotted with the distinct tents of the Army where lot of welfare activities, ranging from medical camp to counselling sessions were held for the ex-soldiers of the Regiment and their family members.

“This is our style of telling the ex-servicemen who had put in their life with the MRC Wellington that we always care for them,” said a senior MRC officer.

Stalls to cater for various aspects of ex-servicemen including of Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, Resettlement, Sainik Boards and Records Offices were set up during the rally.
