Body of Mundka fire victim handed over to kin of another deceased

Friday, 24 June 2022 | Staff Reporter | DELHI

After more than a month a building caught fire in west Delhi's Mundka area in which 27 people lost their lives, Delhi Police on Thursday said that the body of a victim was earlier mistakenly handed over to the family members of another victim.

According to police, the body of Sweety was mistakenly identified Ranju’s body as both have same characteristics.

A total of 27 people were charred to death in the massive blaze that ripped through the four-storey building on May 13. Out of which, police had already handed over 22 dead bodies, they said, a senior police officer said. In the early stage of the case, eight dead bodies were handed over to their family members on June 7. Further, the FSL authorities handed over DNA profiles of three unknown dead bodies on the evening of June 7.

According to Sameer Sharma, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Outer district, on Wednesday, four DNA profiles were received regarding which we will hand over the bodies to concern.

“There are five bodies in Sanjay Gandhi hospital out of which the post-mortem of four -- Soni Kumari, Monika, Parveen and Ranju Devi -- will be conducted on Thursday. Two DNA reports are pending from forensic science laboratory (FSL),” said the DCP.

“On May 14 (next day of the incident), eight bodies were identified by the family members and handed over to them. The FSL reports of seven were correctly matched with the samples of family members.

However, the same of one Ranju Devi could not match. On Wednesday, the FSL report was received which showed that out of five bodies, there is one of Ranju,” said the DCP.

On Thursday, it is being handed over to the family, police said. Santosh Kumar, the husband of Ranju, identified her body through her turtle-shaped ring and two bangles -- the only items that remained unburnt on her charred body.

“I identified her through her ring and bangles -- one red and the other white. I received her body from the hospital and did all the rituals,” he had said.

According to police, the body of one Geeta Devi is still in the hospital. Neither her parents are alive nor does she have children.  The blood samples of her brother and sister provided for the sampling. The FSL has been unable to find satisfactory results with the blood samples of the siblings.

At present, reports of two of the 27 bodies are pending. Others have been identified after DNA testing, according to the police.

The four-storey building was used as office space for multiple companies. According to the Delhi Police’s FIR, the building did not have a fire safety protocol in place.

Following the incident, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) suspended two officials including a section officer. On May 23, a Delhi court granted three days of police custody of the building’s owners– Harish Goyal and Varun Goyal in the said fire tragedy case.
