Cases of measles erupt in Palamu commissionerate

Saturday, 23 April 2022 | M FAIYAZ AHMAD | DALTONGANJ

Cases of measles have started erupting  in the Palamu division, which has 3 districts Garhwa, Palamu and Latehar. Civil surgeon Garhwa Dr Kamlesh Kumar confirming it said, "There was an 'outbreak' of measles at village Arsali under Bhavnathpur block."
He said our team detected 5 cases of suspected measles.  Blood samples of all the 5 were sent to the RIMS Ranchi for a measles test. There is no test facility for measles in the district hospitals across Jharkhand.
Dr Kamlesh said out of the 5 cases, one tested measles positive while three tested measles negative.
No pathological opinion could be formed about the remaining one blood sample  added, Dr Kamlesh Kumar which has been kept pending.
Asked about the 'outbreak' which denotes a larger area of infection to which the surveillance medical officer of WHO Palamu Dr Mirtunjay Singh said "In our medical parlance we use the term outbreak where we come across 5 or more cases of suspected measles. At this Garhwa village Arsali there were found 5 cases and hence it is seen as an outbreak."
The WHO surveillance medical officer said there are 18 outbreaks in Palamu which means 90 people are having symptoms of measles like high fever, maculopapular rashes, runny nose, red hot eyes, cough, tiredness, loss of appetite etc.
However WHO surveillance medical officer clarified that every case having such symptoms is taken as 'suspected case of measles' till its confirmation comes from the RIMS Ranchi.
Cases of measles either come in outbreak form or sporadic, said the civil surgeon Latehar Dr Haren Chandra Mahto.
Mahto said sporadic cases are as noticeable as the outbreak cases. He said last year too there were cases of measles in Latehar.
There is one sporadic case of measles in Latehar, said the WHO surveillance medical officer.
The state government has a full fledged programme called Integrated Disease Surveillance which takes note of such diseases like this measles etc.
Asked about anti measles shots, a WHO surveillance medical officer said there is a vaccine for measles and parents should get their wards covered with it.
The Indian Academy of Paediatrics recommends first shots of measles vaccine at the 9 months of age and second at the 16 months of age. Measles vaccine comes free in the government hospital.
Sources said it takes more than two weeks to come round and one affected by the measles has to have full care of one's lungs.
