Cash scandal: Court orders release of MLAs’ vehicles

Tuesday, 04 October 2022 | PNS | Ranchi

A Calcutta based court has ordered the release of vehicles of three Congress MLAs, who were caught with unaccounted cash in July this year. Three Congress legislators Irfan Ansari (Jamtara), Rajesh Kachaap (Khijri) and Naman Vixel Kongari (Kolebira) were caught with unaccounted Rs 49 lakh from Howrah district. The cash was seized from the vehicle of Ansari and these MLAs were charged with toppling the Hemant Soren government.

Sources said that the release of vehicles is a big relief for these MLAs. Ansari claimed that the Calcutta Court decision to release the vehicle is big relief for them as court had stated that there is nothing on record to give rise to the belief that the money recovered from them was meant for a conspiracy to topple the Jharkhand government,

The Congress MLA from Jamtara also claimed that the decision to release the vehicle is a step in direction of granting them regular bail as the court has already observed that no proof of any conspiracy to topple the government has been found so far.

The three Congress MLAs on July 30 were held by Howrah police with Rs 49 lakh cash, allegedly for their involvement in hatching a conspiracy to topple Hemant Soren's Government in Jharkhand. The Congress party in a face saving mode suspended these MLAs and also lodged a complaint against them.

Bormo MLA Kumar Jaimangal lodged an FIR against them for making attempts to topple Hemant Soren's Government in Jharkhand which came into power with a thumping majority.

Jaimangal in his FIR also alleged that he was also offered gratification along with a definite ministerial berth to topple the present alliance government of JMM, Congress and RJD. Jaimangal further alleged that the MLAs were offered `10 crore each for switching sides.

However, despite Congress acting strongly against these MLAs, the MLAs always denied the allegation that they were involved in toppling the Soren government.

After the cash scandal and the arrest of three Congress MLAs with cash in Bengal, infighting in the Congress has increased. Furkan Ansari, father of MLA Irfan Ansari, who was arrested with cash, has opened a front against Congress MLA Anoop Singh alias Jaimangal Singh. He alleges that Anoop’s photo with the Chief Minister of Assam is going viral. While on other hand these MLAs continued their legal fight in Calcutta High Court.

In August, the Calcutta High Court granted interim bail to three suspended Congress MLAs  Irfan Ansari, Naman Bixal Kongari and Rajesh Kachhap. While granting bail, the double bench of the Calcutta High Court also directed them not to leave Kolkata for the next three months and asked them to ensure that they appear before the investigative officer of the case every week and since then they are living in Calcutta.
