The marriage of a minor girl with an adult boy scheduled for Sunday was stalled following intervention by a team headed by the District Child Protection Officer.
After the information was received by the District Child Protection Unit the officials immediately rushed to the house of the girl at Srijang and after verifying the date of birth and ascertaining the age of the girl, the team members including the CDPO and Anganwadi worker asked the parents to stop the marriage.
And it was conceded by them.
Reports said both the girl and boy belong to the Brahmin community and residents of Srijang, under the Remuna block. The invitation cards were distributed among the family friends. Local volunteers after learning about the marriage from the card informed the protection unit.
On Saturday while the Mangalpak, a ritual of wedding ceremony before the day of tying the nuptial knot, was going on, it was stopped. Notably, recently the district administration had said that Rs 5,000 would be given as a cash award to those who would be providing the correct information about a child marriage.
