Leaders of the Lok Shakti Abhiyan and the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha have released a report of the Centre for Research on Energy & Clean Air (CREA) on “Health Impact Assessment” of the JSW steel plant project near Paradip and highlighted the shortcomings of the EIA report.
Prafulla Samantara, Mahendra Parida, Deva Prasad Ray, Suresh Panigrahi and Jyoti Ranjan Mohapatra placed the data at a Press meet here suggesting that the ambient air pollutant concentrations are above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM10 and PM2.5, which are prescribed to be 60 μg/m3 for PM10 and 40 μg/m3 for PM2.5 on an annual level.
The dispersion modelling results from the EIA report also shows that the project will add a significant pollution load to the already-existing AAQ levels.
As per the CREA report, the air pollutant emissions would be responsible for an estimated 94 deaths per year (95% confidence interval: 65-129). Air pollution would also lead to a projected 180 emergency room visits due to asthma, 160 preterm births and 75,000 days of work absence per year.
However, the JSW has earmarked Rs 10,000 crore for de-carbonisation, according to its joint managing director Seshagiri Rao.
