Cybercriminals duped Rs 1.99 lakhs from a man under the City police station in Bokaro, police said. Sudhir Kumar a resident of Sector 1/C of Bokaro Steel City was cheated of about Rs 1.99 lakhs fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account after he made the mistake of clicking a message link on his mobile phone. According to the police, Sudhir received a link in his mobile phone message box and clicked that link which transferred him to a new website where Sudhir filled his bank’s Username, Password and OTP, police said. Later, frequently Rs 1.99 lakhs were withdrawn in two attempts from his bank account, police said.
Sudhir is a BSL employee. A Case has been filed and we are investigating the matter, said the OC.
The cops have invoked section 419 / 420 (cheating) / 467 / 468 / 379 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act in the case. The police stated that they are looking into the matter, but warned the public to be on the lookout for fake phone calls and to refrain from disclosing personal information to anyone.
Before providing personal information, anyone who receives such a call should check with bank personnel, he advised.
