Dowry death: Hubby, his parents get life term

Sunday, 02 October 2022 | KAHNU NANDA | JAGATSINGHPUR

Jagatsinghpur District Judge Anup Kumar Chandan on Saturday sentenced a man and his two parents to life term imprisonment and imposed Rs 10,000-fine on each in a dowry death case.

The convicted persons were Ganeswar Bastia and his parents Gangadhar Bastia and Sanjukta Bastia of Ninigaon under Jagatsinghpur block.

The dowry death case had occurred in Bhokanji village in 2012. One Harapriya Khatua had married Ganeswar with Hindu rituals in Dhyanakuda Pitha inr Biridi block.  The bride brought dowry including cash of Rs 50,000. A few months later, the in-laws forced Harapriya to bring Rs 1 lakh from her parents. Harapriya’s father Niranjan Khatua expressed his inability to meet the demand.

Harapriya’s body was found hanging in her in-laws’ kitchen. The in-laws claimed that she committed suicide. But her relatives lodged an FIR in the Jagatsinghpur police station that she was murdered by her in-laws.

Police arrested Ganeswar and his parents and the case progressed.

Public Prosecutor Nalini Ranjan Moharana conducted the case during trial.
