Excise officials on Saturday seized brown sugar worth lakhs of rupees from the residence of a Police Mitra at the Kedarpali slum in the capital city and also arrested a person in this connection.
The accused was identified as Tuna Nayak, the elder brother of the Police Mitra.
Acting on a tipoff, regarding the peddling of brown sugar, the officials conducted a raid at the slum and recovered the contraband packed in over 1,000 small packets each costing around Rs 500 and seized it.
The Excise also arrested the person who was found in possession of the contraband.
Ironically, the contraband was seized from the house of a police mitra volunteer, who was chosen to help the administration to keep the slums free from crime and drugs.
He has been detained for questioning, though he said he had no idea about the contraband was stored in his house.
