More trouble is in store for former minister and senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued summons to his wife and son to question them in a money laundering case being probed against him.
Azam Khan (73), who is also the SP MLA from Rampur, is presently out on bail. His son Abdullah Azam Khan, MLA from Swar assembly seat, and wife Tazeen Fatma have been asked to depose separately before the ED in the regional office in Lucknow this week.
The ED seeks to record their statements under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the case being probed against Azam Khan.
Azam Khan was grilled by the ED when he was lodged in Sitapur jail. He was released from jail in May after 27 months as the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in an alleged forgery case.
The ED had initiated a probe against Khan in 2019 after taking cognisance of at least 26 FIRs filed by the UP Police against him. It was also alleged that a university run by him in Rampur has been constructed over a piece of land under enemy property.
Khan is the chairman of Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar Trust, which runs the three branches of Rampur Public School. He has earlier served as the urban development minister in the erstwhile SP government in UP helmed by Akhilesh Yadav.
