Elderly man cheated of Rs 13 lakh for updating power bill

By posing as an officer of MPEB, a miscreant cheated Rs 13 lakh from the bank account of a retired officer of forest department in the name of updating electricity bill. Immediate call by the victim saved Rs 10 lakh but Rs 3 lakh were transferred by the miscreant.

As soon as the message of withdrawing money from the account came, the victim immediately called the bank due to which Rs 10 lakh were saved while Rs 3 lakh were withdrawn by the cybercriminal.

The accused pretended to update the electricity bill in MPEB's software to execute the fraud. After this he got the retired officer to download Any Desk Remote App in his mobile within two minutes, Rs 13 lakh was transferred from the bank account.

According to the police, Keshav Singh, a resident of DK Devasthali Bawadia Kala, is retired from the forest department. On July 30, he got a call from an unknown number, caller told that he is an officer from MPEB and the bill has not been paid.

If the bill is not paid, the connection will be disconnected till 9 pm. Keshav Singh sent a receipt for depositing electricity bill of Rs 10426 through WhatsApp.

He tricked Keshav Singh to download Any Desk Remote App to update the bill in the system and asked for the PIN code and Re 1 was transferred from Keshav Singh to his account and within minutes Rs 13 lakh were transferred from his bank account.

The victim immediately informed the bank and officials rejected the transaction worth Rs 10 lakh while the money for the second transaction of Rs 3 lakh could not be saved.
