The police on Friday arrested a youth and forwarded him to court, allegedly for killing an elderly woman suspecting her a witch.
The accused who surrendered before the police after committing the
crime was identified as Anil Tanty (23) of Bhalulata Bhatitola under
Bisra police station limits in Sundargarh district, while the deceased
is Sita Tanty(80) of the same village.
Anil’s niece (daughter of elder sister) who is 3 years old had fallen
ill about ten days ago and she was admitted in the Rourkela Government
Hospital. When she did not recover, Anil suspected that Sita had
practised witchcraft on his niece because he had seen her murmuring a
few lines while looking at his niece.
On Thursday morning at around 5.45 am, when Anil was going for
nature’s call, he saw Sita collecting Mahua flower under a tree, near
his house. Anil immediately returned to his house and picked up an axe
and hit the head of Sita with it. Sita fell there and died.
After getting information, Bisra police station IIC Bhagwan Pujari
reached the spot and seized the body. After about an hour of killing
Sita, Anil surrendered before police and confessed to his crime.
