A male elephant allegedly died of electrocution on Sunday in a forest in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur district, an official said.
The carcass of the male elephant, aged around 25 years, was found near Pakni village in the Surajpur forest division, Surajpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sanjay Yadav said.
The tusks of the elephant were not removed, he said.
On being alerted, a team of forest personnel reached the spot and sent the carcass for post-mortem.
Prima facie, it appears the elephant died due to the electric wire fencing laid on the farmland, but the post-mortem report is awaited to ascertain the exact cause, the official said.
Officials are questioning two suspects who laid electric wires.
Chhattisgarh has reported more than 50 elephant deaths in the last four years. Most fatalities were reported from Surguja, Korba, Balrampur, Surajpur, Raigarh, Jashpur and Korea districts.
