Ramesh Bal (64), former president of the Rourkela Bar Association and former Chairman of the Rourkela Municipality was found hanging at his residence at Daily Market here on Tuesday.
The reason behind Bal taking the extreme step was yet to be ascertained.
Bal was residing in his in-laws’ house along with wife, sister-in-law (wife’s elder sister) and mother-in-law and was suffering from kidney- related ailment.
Besides, he was distressed due to his ill health and other social reasons. It was suspected that is why he committed suicide.
Plant Site police station IIC said that Bal has self-declared his suicide and there is no scope of provocation for ending his life.
According to sources, Bal went to his bed room after having dinner on Monday night. But he was found hanging from the ceiling fan of the room on Tuesday morning.
Police have recovered the body for postmortem and initiated investigation to ascertain the circumstances under which he died. His cremation would be held after arrival of his sons, who are residing in Bengaluru and Mumbai, said family sources.
On his demise of many prominent personalities, trade union , social organisations have expressed grief. Thousands of people rushed to his house to pay their last respects.
