Five jail warders in the Rae Bareli district jail have been suspended after a 42-second video clip showing them thrashing their colleague with sticks went viral on social media.
Director General (Prisons) Anand Kumar said that the five jail warders had been suspended for indiscipline and District Jail Superintendent Avinash Gautam had been asked to probe the incident.
Those suspended are Vijay Singh, Saurabh Verma, Parvesh Singh, Rajeev Shukla and Jaswant Tomar.
Police said that a named FIR had been lodged by the victim jail warder Mukesh Kumar Dubey, against the five co-workers under the charges of rioting, punishment for voluntarily causing hurt and punishment for criminal intimidation.
It may be mentioned that a jail warder was severely beaten up by his colleagues over a dispute about the mess food. The warder's co-workers thought that he was harming the canteen's business. They were all assigned to look over inmates locked in the Rae Bareli district jail.
A CCTV camera outside the jail captured the incident. The video shows Mukesh Dubey, supervisor of the jail mess, being struck with sticks by three of his colleagues as two other people watch.
Dubey is heard saying "aur maaro" as three more men surround him and beat him with sticks. At one point, he tries to snatch the stick from one of his coworkers, but the other two men surround him and start beating him severely.
Shortly after the video went viral on social media, the Rae Bareli police replied to a tweet by saying that the five officers had been suspended and that a departmental investigation had been started.
According to Mukesh Dubey, a fight broke out between him and his coworkers as a result of their demand to lower the mess food standards because it was hurting their canteen business.
Mukesh Dubey has been admitted to a hospital for treatment, according to officials. Police also registered a criminal case against all the five accused jail warders.
