The district administration here was on its toes in the wake of an imminent flood situation in the Mahanadi river systems.
The flood water in the river systems of Mahanadi, such as Luna, Karandia, Paika and Chitroptala rivers was swelling with all of them already flowing over the danger level at all the places in the district.
A breach occurred near Ayetipur on gherry embankment of Karandia river. As a result, three villages were marooned following flood water entered into the villages of Balarampur, Ayetipur and Balisingh under Marshaghai block.
100 hectares of agriculture land and vegetables were affected following flood water inundated the bank of the river. The district Collector along with the PD, Sub Collector and other officials of the line departments visited the Luna-Karandia, Paika, Chitroptala embankments and gherry villages to oversee flood preparation including night patrolling, sand bag stacking, ration stocking, evacuation efforts etc.
Meanwhile, piping occurred at the river embankment of Chitroptala near Bhadala, Samsara, Kalabuda, Mahanga under Garadapur block. The locals and line department officials were engaged to arrest the piping in a war footing basis. The district administration evacuated 857 river side villages and started free kitchen in five places for the evacuees.
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister and MLA, Mahakalapada Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, on Tuesday reviewed the flood situation. NDRF and ODRAF teams had been deployed in the district at the flood prone blocks whereas four fire brigade teams were too deployed with their mechanised boats.
