Waste and garbage disposal is in a chaotic state in Sonepur Municipality. The residents have been demanding for proper collection and disposal of garbage.
Lack of adequate sanitation facilities has added to the woes. Most of the roadsides have turned into garbage dumps, despite privatisation of the services. The tall claim that the basic services would improve after privatisation has proved wrong, the residents said.
As per reports, some wards do not have provision for door- to-door collection of garbage and the residents of the wards located near a market area face utter difficulties. Disposal of household garbage is always a headache for them every day.
In some of the places, garbage is picked up with the help of tractors. As the vehicles reach specific locations at indefinite time, garbage often is seen lying on the roads for long hours. Garbage thrown in open spaces create bad odour and cause pollution.
Ward No. 2 covers an area starting from Vigilance office up to the Mauli Mandir on west side of the town, including Vivekananda Nagar and Block Chowk. After privatisation, tractors and battery operated vehicles are engaged for daily transportation of garbage. Some of the battery operated vehicles have now become defunct and are not being repaired.
Meanwhile, demanding that the garbage management be streamlined soon, the residents of Sonepur have warned to resort to agitation against lapses in this regard.
