A young girl hanged self after her lover also died by suicide over rejection of their relationship by their families at Samantarapur village under the Jarada police station in Ganjam district on Tuesday.
The deceased duo was identified as Sonu Behera and Sunita Pradhan.
According to reports, Sonu took the extreme step by hanging himself from a tree after his family did not agree for his marriage with Sunita. When the girl found him hanging from a tree near his house, she rushed to the suicide spot.
But the family members of Sonu blamed Sunita for his death and abused her. Unable to bear the shock of losing her lover, she also ended her life shortly later by hanging self with her dupatta (a long scarf) from another tree about half a kilometer from the Sonu’s suicide site.
On receiving information about suicides of the lovers, the Jarada police reached the spots and began a probe into the incidents.
