Thursday, 16 June 2022 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

As the heatwave continued to scorch the national Capital, the power demand in Delhi on Wednesday clocked 7,334 MW, the highest to date in the month of June.

According to the sources in discoms, Delhi’s power demand continues its northwards climb, creating new records along the way. On Wednesday at 3:35 P.M. the city’s peak power demand not only clocked the season’s highest of 7,334 MW, but also the highest-ever in the month of June.

“Before June 9, the city’s peak power demand had never crossed the 7,000 MW during June. However, on May 19 this year, it clocked 7,070 MW.  In fact, it has already crossed the 7,000 MW-mark six times in June this year and once in May,” it stated.  “This June, every single day of the month, Delhi’s power demand has crossed the 6,000 MW-mark. In 2021, it crossed the 6K mark on nine occasions through the month, five times in 2020 and thrice in 2019,” it said.

“Earlier in May, barring five occasions, every day Delhi’s peak power demand crossed the 6,000 MW-mark.  Delhi’s peak power demand in May had never crossed 6,000 MW in 2021 and 2020. In 2019, it had crossed the 6,000 MW-mark only on three occasions - May 29 (6,020 MW), May 30 (6,240 MW), and May 31 (6,461 MW),” sources said.

While giving the reason behind the increasing power demand in Delhi, he said that the cooling load was the main reason behind Delhi’s power load. In fact, according to estimates, almost around 50 per cent of the city's power demand in the summers is because of the cooling load which includes ACs, coolers, and fans.

“The Capital city’s expected peak power demand for 2022, is around 8,200 MW,” he further said.
