The Mahasamund Collector in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday suspended a hostel superintendent for negligence that led to the death of a girl student due to electrocution.

Kiran Diwan, 14, was electrocuted and fellow student Kajal Chauhan suffeered burn injuries on Wednesday evening when a flagpole on which the national flag was hoisted came in contact with a live wire while they were removing it.

Collector Nilesh Kumar Kshirsagar suspended Aishwarya Sahu, the superintendent of the Pre-Matric Scheduled Tribe Girls Hostel in Patewa village with immediate effect.

He also ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The action came after Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday ordered the suspension of the hostel superintendent, an official communication said.

Baghel expressed grief over the incident and directed that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh under the RBC (Revenue Book Circular) and Rs 1 lakh under Chhatra Durghatna Beema Yojana be provided to the Diwan family.

Kiran Diwan and Kajal Chauhan were removing the long iron pole on which the national flag was hoisted when it accidentally fell on a high-tension electricity line passing through the hostel premises, causing them electric shock, Mahasamund Additional Superintendent of Police Megha Tembhurkar said.
