Low pressure over BoB by Aug 7

A low pressure system is likely to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal (BoB) around August 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

The low pressure system is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of the State between August 7 and August 8, the Regional Office of the IMD here said.

Notably, the State has been witnessing a dry spell as the southwest monsoon was subdued in the State. The fresh system is likely to bring more rainfall activities and also bring down the maximum temperature.

“Under influence of gradual strengthening of monsoon flow and the anticipated low pressure area, rainfall activity is very likely to increase gradually from August 5. Widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur during August 6 to 10 over the districts of Odisha,” said the IMD.

Under the influence of strong monsoon flow and anticipated low pressure area, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph very likely over deep sea areas off West Central Bay of Bengal from August 7.

The weather office issuing a yellow warning said heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Gajapati and Ganjam in the next 24 hours.

On August 8, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and Gajapati.

Also heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Nuapada, Kalahandi, Balangir, Bargarh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur.
