A man arrested in the alleged dowry death case of his daughter-in-law ended his life inside a prison in Mathura, jail officials claimed on Tuesday.
Jail Superintendent Brajesh Kumar Singh said Hari Singh, who was a resident of Mardaura under Baldeo police station area, was in jail since May 23, 2021, in connection with the alleged dowry death of his daughter-in-law.
On Monday afternoon, he hanged himself from a pillar outside barrack number 7, he said. Fellow inmates brought him down and rushed him to the jail hospital. He was referred to the district hospital but he died on the way, the superintendent said.
Hari’s son was also lodged in the same jail. Before taking the extreme steps, Hari spoke to his daughter over the phone. The family members claimed that he was upset as the charges against him were fabricated. As he lost hope of getting justice, he decided to end his life, the bereaved family members claimed. A case was registered in this regard and the body was sent for autopsy.
Meanwhile in Jaunpur, three people died on the spot after a tempo they were travelling in was hit by a speeding truck on the Varanasi-Lucknow Highway in Badlapur Kotwali area on Tuesday morning.
The police sent the bodies for autopsy. On the basis of the driving licence recovered from the pocket of a victim, the police identified him as Parvez Akhtar of Rewasa police station in Chandauli. The identities of two other victims could not be ascertained.
In another mishap in Sambhal, a speeding truck hit the bike of a senior section officer of the Electricity department. He and a local boy who hitched a ride on the bike died on the spot. The section officer (Tanda) was returning home from his workplace in Khaspur village. On the way, he gave a lift to a local boy. As they moved ahead, a speeding truck hit the bike.
Elsewhere in Etah, a roadways bus hit another bus, leaving about a dozen passengers injured even as the operator of Secunderabad depot died on the spot. Police reached the scene and sent the body for autopsy. They also rushed the injured to Etah Medical College. The doctors referred eight of them to Agra Medical College. SSP Uday Shankar Singh said the Secunderabad depot bus was going to Delhi from Kanpur when it developed some technical snag and stopped on the highway near Saitari outpost of Malawan police station.
