Mayawati flays govt over confrontation on arrest of a journalist

Thursday, 07 July 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati, on Wednesday, said the state governments should work seriously and in coordination to establish the rule of law as only then people would live in a fear-free and tension-free atmosphere.

Her remarks came after a confrontation between the Chhattisgarh Police and Uttar Pradesh Police. The Chhattisgarh cops arrived in Noida on Tuesday to arrest a journalist for airing a fake video of a Congress leader.

Mayawati, on Wednesday, tweeted that swift police action on fake news, hate speech, provocative speech had taken a serious form across the country, due to which the confrontation between UP and Chhattisgarh police over the arrest of a TV journalist made media headlines on Tuesday. She said the issue was also discussed at various social media platforms.

Mayawati said that due to such tragic developments, the rule of law was destroyed and the life of the common man was also affected. She said all governments should act in a neutral way and seriously. “Only then will people be able to get rid of tension and live in a fear-free environment. Control of anarchy and rule of law is necessary for development,” the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh added.

It may be mentioned that after Nupur Sharma's statement, there is a constant discussion on controlling fake news and hate speech after the protests in Arab countries and the heinous murder in Udaipur.
