In an incident of kangaroo justice, a man was garlanded with chappals and tied to the front of a moving truck for allegedly stealing a mobile phone at Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday.
The video of the incident has gone viral on social media As per reports, the incident occurred near Bhatamundai on the Chandikhol-Paradip road.
The man was caught by the truck’s driver and helpers when he was trying to flee after allegedly stealing the phone from the vehicle. The driver and his associates tied him to the front of the vehicle and put a garland of slippers around his neck. Then they drove the truck for 15 to 20 minutes. They also thrashed the accused before setting him free. A local resident reportedly shot a video of the incident. No police complaint was lodged in this connection so far.
Meanwhile, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) taking suo motto cognisance, asked the Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police Akhileshvar Singh to probe the incident and submit a report. Singh has been asked to submit the report within 15 days from the date of receipt of the OHRC order. The commission fixed the next date for hearing on June 17.
