No HC Bench stand by assn stirs hornet's nest in W Odisha

Saturday, 21 May 2022 | NIMAI CHARAN SAHU | SAMBALPUR

There is uproar in Sambalpur and all over western Odisha after the decision of the Orissa High Court Bar Association at Cuttack protesting HC Benches in western and southern Odisha.

“This is totally arbitrary and against the very unity of the State,” opined many people from western Odisha. Voicing her concern, Balangir MP Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo in a tweet said, “This will defeat the very purpose of the Government to bring about parity and development in western and southern Odisha.” Sangeeta apart, common people of the region also came forward to protest the decision of the High Court Bar Association. “Such a decision will compel us to demand a separate State,” warned Golak Bihari Mishra, an elite citizen and a social worker.

There are many States which have branches of their High Court and the people there get speedy justice and they don’t have to spend money and time to travel far.  “Then why HC Bar Association is going against the people of a vast portion of the State,” asked Mishra. People were more active in social media after they came to know the decision of the HC Bar Association. Even some wrote that the HC Bar was not above the Government and hence it should know its limit, they suggested.

“We condemn the decision of the HC Bar Association. But we will achieve our demand at any cost, as it is our right and hence no one can stop it,” said former president of the Sambalpur District Bar Association Dr Pramod Rath. “The lawyers and some people at the helm of affairs of coastal Odisha have never expressed any positive view for the development of the backward region. But we are least bothered since we don’t seek anyone’s mercy for our rights,” Dr Rath said in hard words.

He further reminded that the State Government in 2007 has already intimated the Centre to provide all infrastructure for HC benches. Hence, HC Bar Association needs to refrain from such negative attitude, Dr Rath suggested.
