No respite from heat, temp touches 43.8 C: IMD

Sunday, 12 June 2022 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

No respite from scorching heat as the maximum temperature in the national Capital on Saturday settled at 43.8 degrees Celsius, which is four notches above the normal for this time of the year.

According to the data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) the observatories at Ridge, Ayanagar, Najafgarh, Pitampura, Palam, and Lodhi Road recorded maximum temperatures of 44.9 degrees Celsius, 44.4 degrees Celsius, 46.3 degrees Celsius, 46.1 degrees Celsius, 44.2 degrees Celsius and 43.8 degrees Celsius respectively. Delhi witnessed the peak power demand of 6991 at 2: 23 pm on Saturday. On the other hand, several areas in the national Capital were reeling under the short supply of water. The IMD has forecast no respite for Delhiites from the scorching heat till June 15.

Delhi has been reeling under severe heatwave conditions for the last one week and the conditions are expected to be the same till June 15, owing to the dry weather.

The data showed that the minimum temperature settled at 29.7 degrees Celsius, two notches warmer for this season. The relative humidity in Delhi on Saturday at 8:30 in the morning was 30 per cent and 15 per cent at 5:30 in the evening, recorded at Safdarjung observatory. The IMD said that partly cloudy skies with thunder, lightning, and strong surface winds are expected in Delhi in the next few days but no major respite from the heat is likely till June 15.

Heatwave conditions are expected to prevail in isolated pockets of Delhi, Haryana, northwest Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh till June 15, a Skymet Weather report said.

The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded in the 'poor' (285) category around 6:45 pm, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) data.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. According to sources in discoms, Delhi witnessed peak power demand of 6991 at 2: 23 pm on Saturday. The national capital witnessed the minimum power demand of 4441 at 8:23 am, the sources said. The city witnessed the peak power demand 7166 MW on June 9, which is the highest this year. While informing about the reason behind the peak power demand of the city, they said that the cooling load is the main reason behind Delhi’s power load.

Infact, according to estimates, almost around 50 per cent of Delhi’s power demand in summers is because of the cooling load which includes, Acs, Coolers, and Fans.  The rain had a direct bearing on the cooling load.

The officials of the BSES told that during the year, BSES discoms invested substantial resources to strengthen the network and undertook several unique measures to ensure reliable power supply during the summer months. Apart from preventive maintenance, BSES also does extensive predictive checks to identify hot spots or to pre-determine potential faults and to take remedial measures.

“This is done through thermal scanning, partial discharge measurement, and health assessment of power and distribution transformers. The online load monitoring system is also in place for tracking the power transformers & 11kV feeder load especially during the summers,” he said.
