“We don’t want mercy but the right to organise, freedom of association and collective bargaining for migrant workers, former MP, national vice president of INTUC and chairman, Building and Wood Workers International Migrant Workers Group Dr RC Khuntia said in the International Migrant Workers review forum meeting held from May 16 to 20 by the UN Migrant Workers Network.
The meeting was inaugurated by the president of General Assembly, Abdulla Sahid. More than 100 national Governments, including Minister of State External Affairs Nalisa Patel and Permanent Mission of India to UNO TS Trimurthi participated.
After a threadbare discussion on migrant labourers problems and issues, a nonbinding convention compact was approved in the UNO with 23 objectives and 12 action points. The meeting was arranged to review the progress of implementation of the migrant workers compact. Dr Khuntia, Appolinar Tolontina of BWI, general secretary SARTUC Laxman Basnet, Nalisha Patel of Solidarity Center, Ponlla Kanli for BWI met Indian mission TS Tirumurti and UN Ambassador of Philippines, Qatar and Nepal and gave memorandum in favour of migrant labourers.
