Punjab's former Dy CM receives threat calls, demand for ransom

Thursday, 23 June 2022 | PNS | Chandigarh

Nearly a month after he moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the State Government’s decision to prune his security, Punjab’s former Deputy Chief Minister OP Soni on Wednesday claimed to have received threat calls from the gangsters demanding ransom money. Soni, who has lodged a complaint with the police, claimed that he has received threat calls on his personal WhatsApp number from three different mobile numbers. The caller claimed himself to be one of the members of the Lawerence Bishnoi gang and tried to extort money from Soni. An FIR (first information report) has been registered at Amritsar’s Cantonment Police Station against the unknown person(s). Soni has reportedly provided all the mobile numbers to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) from which he had received calls. Soni has also sought the police protection for himself and his entire family as, as per the complaint, the caller had demanded money from the Congress leader, and had threatened him and his family members with dire consequences in case their demand was not fulfilled. Notably, a few days ago, former Ajnala MLA Amarpal Singh Bony had also reportedly received an extortion call. He got calls on his WhatsApp and the caller introduced himself as a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Since then the police have increased Boney's security.
