Special Judge, POCSO Court Ranjan Kumar Sutar on Tuesday convicted a rape accused for 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and also slapped Rs 10,000 as penalty, in default another two years in jail.
The convict Sanjay Das (42), a resident of village Karua under the Singla police station of Basta block, had committed penetrative sexual assault on a five-year-old girl of same village on August 17, 2019. The accused is a distant relative of the victim.
The girl’s grandfather, after learning about the incident, had lodged an FIR with the local police. Following investigation by police, Das was arrested and charge-sheeted. Since then, Das was in jail while he was tried and convicted under the POCSO Act.
“It is a red flag case and the court awarded different jail terms under different sections which would run concurrently and penalties for different sections. Fourteen witnesses were examined and 18 documents were exhibited,” said Special Public Prosecutor, POCSO, Pranab Panda.
