SAD reconstitutes core committee; Rebels Jagmeet Brar, Ayali out

Thursday, 01 December 2022 | PNS | Chandigarh

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday re-constituted its core committee, while creating for the first time an advisory board, giving no place to the party “rebels” — former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar and party MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali.

Claiming to having given due representation to all sections of society, the Akali Dal has, for the first time, made the presidents of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) and the Istri Akali Dal the ex-officio members of the core committee to bring in more cohesion in decision making.

In another first, the party has also created an Advisory Board to the SAD president.

Interestingly, the names Jagmeet Brar and Ayali do not figure in the reconstituted body — apparently for openly speaking against the party and not toeing its line.

Notably, SAD had dissolved all its committees and wings after the party suffered another defeat during the Sangrur bypoll. The move was initiated following the recommendations made by the Jhunda committee.

“SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal has given a new look to the party by inducting talent from all sections of society into its core committee which has been reconstituted with the induction of 12 more leaders,” read the party’s official statement.

The party has also given due representation to all sections of society with the new entrants including former minister Anil Joshi, former MLA NK Sharma, besides MLA Dr Sukhwinder Sukhi and former MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu. Backward classes leader Sunita Chaudhary has also been inducted into the core committee.

“SAD has for the first time also created an Advisory Board to the SAD president. The members of the new Advisory Board include senior leaders Charanjit Singh Atwal, Kirpal Singh Badungar, Bibi Upinderjit Kaur, Baldev Singh Mann, Madan Mohal Mittal, Parkash Chand Garg, Vir Singh Lapoke, Varinder Singh Bajwa, and Jarnail Singh Wahid,” it added.

The name of Harcharan Singh Bains, who was earlier the national advisor to the party president, is missing from the advisory board. The party sources maintained that Bains is the media advisor to the party.

Former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has been designated as the Chief Patron while senior leader Ranjit Singh Brahmpura has been designated as Patron of the party. Paramjit Singh Sarna and Naresh Gujral have been nominated as Special Invitees to the core committee.
