Thursday, 24 November 2022 | MAlAY RAY | SUNDARGARH

A pall of gloom descends generally when a person dies, with the family members, relatives and neighbours grieving over the loss, but in Kutra block of Sundargarh district, the atmosphere was quite different on Sunday morning. A 115 years old woman died and her near and dear ones took her body to the graveyard dancing to the tune of DJ music.

Her last journey was celebrated in a grand way. A video of the procession has gone viral.

Mangri Surin(115), a resident of Panchara Bastipara under Kutra block of Sundargarh district, passed away on Saturday night. Mangri is survived by his two sons and grandsons and granddaughters.

On Sunday afternoon, when her body was prepared to be taken to the graveyard, a vehicle carrying DJ music was called near her house and about 50 people of the locality including her family members and neighbourers carried out her last journey in a different way. The procession was led by DJ music playing Sambalpuri songs. A group of persons danced in front of the deceased Mangri’s bier on the road of the village and continued their dance in accompaniment of the music up to the graveyard.

“My mother lived for 115 years with happiness. We therefore took her body to the graveyard by playing music and dancing,” said Prasanta Surin, son of the deceased.
