Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, who is working on an innovative idea, interacted with the young MLAs (up to 40 years) on Tuesday. He met the young MLAs cutting across the parties in small groups. Mahana was all ears to their views and also shared his experience with the legislators. Mahana has been an 8-term MLA since 1991.
The programme was organised in a local hotel and it lasted for over four hours. As many as 32 MLAs took part in the meeting. Mahana urged the young legislators to be with the people, know about their issues and discuss the same in the state assembly.
“The electorate now keep a close eye on their elected representatives. If people have elected you, they have aspirations and expectations from the elected representatives. The MLAs should never lose connect with people to be able to get elected again,” Mahana said. He urged the legislators to give maximum time to the House when the state assembly is in session and also go to the library for regular study.
The young MLAs appreciated the initiative taken by the speaker. They said it was a great learning experience.
The legislators told the speaker that the assembly members should be nominated to different committees of the House as per their orientation and qualification. Mahana assured the legislators that their suggestion would be looked into. Mahana had earlier organised a similar programme for MLAs who are medicos.
