The primary teachers’ strike continued to rock the State Assembly for the third day as opposition Congress and BJP members stalled the proceedings over the issue on Wednesday.
The opposition members allowed the Question Hour to run on the day which had been adjourned for the last two days due to protests by them.
During the Zero Hour, the Opposition raised the issue of the agitating teachers and came down heavily on the State Government for not paying any heed to the demands of the teachers, who are on an indefinite strike on Mahatma Gandhi Road here.
As pandemonium prevailed, speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha adjourned the House for ten minutes and convened an all-party meeting to resolve the matter. As the Opposition remained adamant on their stand, the Speaker adjourned the House till 4 pm.
Later in the day, the teachers withdrew their dharna at Mahatma Gandhi Marg and postponed the strike till December 20 as the State Chief Secretary formed a committee to consider the teachers’ demands by that date. The teachers’ three-point charter of demands are abolition of the contractual system, introduction of the seventh pay scale, grade system and old pension system.
