Chhattisgarh Police on Friday arrested two persons and recovered gold ornaments valued at Rs 17 lakh from them in Mahasamund district.
Mahasamund Superintendent of Police Bhojram Patel identified them as Manpreet Singh (30) and car driver Wahaj-Ud-Din (37).
Singh is from Amritsar in Punjab. The latter is a resident of Maudahapara in Raipur city.
The police intercepted a car at the Temri Naka check post and found the ornaments in a bag, the officer said.
The men told the police that they were returning from Odisha to Raipur after selling some ornaments which they had brought from Amritsar. But they failed to produce any documents for the jewellery, Patel said.
The police seized the ornaments which include 16,285 nose pins, 332 gold beads, 423 lockets and a chain, the officer added.
