“Pollution-heat combo is putting Delhi/NCR residents at added risk of illness,” says Dr Rajesh Kesari

The residents of Delhi/NCR are fighting a gruelling battle on two fronts —  extreme dry heat and high air pollution — which is making it impossible for people to breathe outdoors. These factors have put residents at a very high risk of illness.

According to a ASSOCHAM study, high levels of air pollution are a leading cause for the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India. Some of the ailments from excessive exposure to pollution are stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, and lung cancer.

Examining the impact of indoor, outdoor and workplace pollution, the study reveals that 76 per cent of country’s population with NCDs is exposed to air pollution. The younger folks, who step out regularly for employment or education are more prone to pollution-related illness. 29 per cent of population is exposed to household pollution, which is caused by cooking fuel. Similarly, 20 per cent of people are exposed to it at their workplace. Pollution can have lasting effects on a person’s health. A few ways in which people in Delhi-NCR can protect themselves from hazardous air include wearing a mask outside, checking the AQI before going out for exercise, staying away from dust, investing in air purifiers and air purifying plants. For household pollution, residents can switch to induction cooktops.

Also, scorching heat is certainly viewed as a more immediate concern by people and many risks are involved. Keep yourself hydrated, eat healthy and light and cover your head and body when going out in the sun.
