‘Central Committee to take positive steps on drought’

In a meeting with the State Agriculture Minister, Badal, on Wednesday, Central Government Officials’ team leader and Joint Secretary S Rukmani said, “We have taken stock of Ranchi's Chanho block and our team will go to 7 districts to assess the drought situation and send its report to the sub-committee of the Central Government and we are hopeful that the Central Committee will take positive decisions on the recommendations sent by our team.”

Badal held a meeting with the Central Government officials’ team that had come to assess the drought situation in the State and informed about the situation. After the meeting held at Nepal House, Badal said that 226 blocks have come under the grip of drought. He said that the Central Government team has been informed about all the points and it is expected that the Central Government will take a positive decision on the report submitted by the central team and will take appropriate steps for the upliftment of the drought-affected farmers.
 
The Agriculture Minister further said that the department had made all the preparations in advance and had also done other works from seed distribution, but due to less rains in the State, there has been about 65 per cent less yield. Till August 15, instead of 658 mm, only 426.3 mm of rain was received, due to which 226 blocks of the State were affected. He said that the State Government is working for the economic empowerment of 58 lakh farmers of the State.

To inspect the situation of drought in the State a team consisting of Government of India officials reached Ranchi on Tuesday in leadership of Joint Secretary to the Government of India, S Rukmani. This team will hold a meeting with the officials of the State Government.

The team will visit the drought affected areas, Only after that it will be decided what is the status of that area in the list issued by the Jharkhand Government. Till January 13, the team will take stock of different blocks of Jharkhand. Only after that, according to the demand of Jharkhand, a decision will be taken on whether the Central Government will get assistance of Rs 9,000 crores under the drought relief scheme or not.

In the team that reached Ranchi, Dr Man Singh, Niti Aayog's, SC Meena, Director, Karan Chowdhary, Dr Rajshekhar, Advisor, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, VR Thakre, Director of Animal Husbandry Department, UK Nayyar, Deputy Secretary of Rural Development, Pramod Narayan, Director of Water Resources Department, Mahesh Kumar, Director, Department of Expenditure, Brijmohan Singh, Assistant Director, Khadi and Public Distribution Department are included.
