Two persons were killed and three others injured when an SUV overturned after hitting a number of motorcycles in Boudh district on Thursday. The deceased included a Panchayat Executive Engineer (PEO).
The Scorpio was on the way to Bhubaneswar from Balangir when it hit five motorbikes one after another at Bahira Chhak in the morning. The mishap was so severe that the motorcycles were scattered all over the road and their riders were thrown on the road.
Two persons, including Ainlapali PEO Gobinda Sahu, died on the spot. Sahu was travelling by his motorcycle to the panchayat office to attend the flag hoisting ceremony on the Republic Day. Another person, who was standing at the roadside, also died in the mishap.
However, the driver of the SUV managed to flee from the spot.
Irate locals shifted the injured to a nearby hospital and blocked NH-57 by burning tyres demanding compensation for the families of the deceased. Police rushed to the spot, pacified the crowd and brought the situation under control.
