To create a jan andolan by encouraging ward-level mobilization of citizens, led by women, towards the goal of a ‘Garbage-Free Chandigarh’, the citizens braved the rain on Friday to participate in ‘Swachh Mashaal’ rallies in all the 35 wards led by area councilors and women of the City Beautiful.

Organized by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC), citizens spread awareness about zero waste, source segregation, and home composting despite the rain. Mayor Anup Gupta led the Swachh Mashal rally at Sector 19 while other councilors led different rallies at their respective areas along with local residents.

Chandigarh brought the month-long celebration of womanhood and women-led sanitation to an end, by making a giant human chain representing the symbol of womanhood. During this entire month, under the banner of “Chandigarh ki Naari, Gandagi Pe Bhaari”, the MCC recognized the efforts of 31 women over 31 days, and celebrated Holi with women safai karmacharis, brought tradition and swachhata together in Swachh Kanjak event and finally braved the rain and organized Swachh Mashaal rallies in all 35 wards.

At the end of Swachh Mashaal Rallies, cleanliness drives were organized at each ward, followed by a pledge-taking ceremony where the participants took an oath to keep the city clean and to actively promote the practice of waste segregation and composting.
