Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) workshop at IIT-ISM

The  Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)organised a  workshop on collaboration between IIT (ISM) Dhanbad  here today. J Roy Chowdhury, former Deputy Director General and presently consultant, delivered a lecture on Need, benefits and the eco-system of Standards and Collaboration Opportunities with BIS.

Roy Chowdhury highlighted the evolution of BIS, the need for standards and their benefits. Other highlights of his presentation were on Standards National Action Plan (SNAP) with emphasis on drivers of future Standardization Key Standardization, areas/Subjects of future national standardization. He discussed the need of collaborations and opportunities for active  participation of students, research scholars and faculty of IITs.

“We are the largest standardization organization of world” said Roy Chowdhury while giving details of  certification of gold and silver jewelleries of different jewellers from across the country being carried out by BIS.

Over the existing laboratories he said that BIS has eight laboratories of its own situated across the country while it has networking with over 550 other laboratories 287 of which are private laboratories engaged in testing work while others are laboratories of government organizations including laboratories of IITs.

Prof MK Singh, Dean of Student Welfare of IIT (ISM) who is also Director in Charge of the institute  highlighted the legacy and achievements of the IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and thanked BIS for their collaboration and signing memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute.

Prof Sarat Das, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering introduced the collaboration to the gathering comprising students and faculty members of different departments and also coordinated the programme.
