Mayawati supports BJP on inauguration of new Parl building

Friday, 26 May 2023 | PNS | Lucknow

With several opposition parties announcing to remain away from the inauguration of the new Parliament building, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Thursday declared her support to the Bharatiya Janata Party over the said controversy.

Almost all major opposition parties are demanding inauguration of the new Parliament House by President Droupadi Murmu instead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and have declared that they will not attend the function.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, the BSP chief claimed that when the Congress was in power at the Centre, the BSP had always supported it irrespective of party politics on issues related to the country and public interest.

Similarly now, when the National Democratic Alliance government is in power, her party continues to support the BJP on issues of public and national interest, Mayawati added.

She said that her party welcomed the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28.

In her second tweet, the former chief minister of UP said that the boycott by the opposition parties, just because President Droupadi Murmu was not inaugurating the new Parliament building, was unfair.

“The government has built the new Parliament House so it has the right to inaugurate it,” she said, adding that it was unfair to link this issue with tribal women’s respect.

“They should have thought of this while fielding a candidate against her (Murmu) instead of facilitating her victory unopposed,” the BSP chief said.

In her third tweet, Mayawati said, “I have received the invitation for the programme dedicated to the country i.e. the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament House, for which I thank and extend my best wishes. But due to my pre-scheduled engagement regarding the continuous review meetings of the party, I will not be able to attend that function.”

It may be mentioned here that several opposition parties, including Congress, have launched a campaign to bring all like-minded parties on one platform before the coming parliamentary elections next year to defeat the NDA and stop it from forming government at the Centre for the third consecutive time.
