National workshop stresses on soil, water conservation

Forestry experts from across country on Thursday underlined the need to conserve and preserve natural resources at a national workshop organized by the Chhaattisgarh Department of Forest and Climate Change here.

An official communication said at the end of the three-day workshop that detailed discussions were held on various measures for soil and moisture conservation.

The Principle Chief Conservator of Forest, V Srinivas Rao, highlighted the rapid implementation of the Narva Development Programme in Chhattisgarh for land and water conservation.

He mentioned that the ambitious programme has successfully 6,395 canals in forest areas besides treating and reviving an area of 22.92 lakh hectares.

The Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Produce Association Managing Director, Anil Rai, highlighted that the state is abundant in forests, offering immense possibilities for generating income from forest-based products.

The state procures 65 types of Minor Forest Produce at support price and does value addition and processing.

Forestry experts and officials shared their insights on groundwater conservation initiatives undertaken in their respective states.

The workshop also highlighted the use of geo-informatics in resource management. This proves highly beneficial for mapping forest areas, determining boundaries and selecting suitable locations to build water structures.
