Days after Central Government sought an action taken report from the Punjab Government on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security breach in January 2022 while questioning the delay in acting against the “erring” officers, the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday made it clear that no compromise will be tolerated in regard to the PM's security.
“The Prime Minister's cavalcade was stopped in January 2022 when the Congress Government was in power. The Supreme Court had formed a committee and it pointed out officers who were responsible for the security. No compromise in the PM's security will be tolerated and the protocol should be followed. Whatever report I will get, will be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs,” said Mann.
A day before, the Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua had said that the State Government will soon send the ‘interim’ report to MHA on the security breach issue. At the same time, he had made it clear that the government would give an opportunity for hearing to the erring officers before taking action against them.
The Chief Secretary had said that the Punjab Government has received an inquiry report by the Supreme Court-constituted panel on the security breach and it is under consideration.
“We have the report now, it's under consideration. Action is being taken but an opportunity for a hearing is given to all officers before action is taken. We send an interim report (to MHA) in a day or two that we are taking these actions,” the Chief Secretary had said.
It has been learnt that no less than nine senior officers, including the then Chief Secretary Anirudh Tiwari and the then Director-General of Police (DGP) S Chattopadhyaya, are set to face action in connection with the security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on January 5, 2022.
Besides, the action is expected to be initiated against Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans and Charanjit Singh; Additional DGPs Nageswara Rao and Naresh Arora; Inspector Generals Rakesh Aggarwal and Inderbir Singh; and the then deputy IG Surjeet Singh (now retired).
