Road repair work crawls, Badrinath pilgrims may face consequences

Tuesday, 07 February 2023 | PNS | JOSHIMATH

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working on repairing the stretch of the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway from Joshimath to Marwadi where cracks have appeared and subsidence has occurred. The condition of the Narsinh Mandir route for the pilgrimage to Badrinath is not reliable. Considering this, the authorities and pilgrims may have to face some challenges while undertaking the pilgrimage to Badrinath. The portals of Badrinath temple are slated to be reopened to the public on April 27.

The portals of Badrinath- the most visited shrine of the Char Dham temples in Uttarakhand- are to be reopened to the public in less than three months.  The BRO is working at a brisk pace to repair the damage caused by cracks and land subsidence on the stretch of the national highway to Badrinath between Joshimath and Marwadi. The highway has developed cracks and suffered from subsidence at various spots on this stretch. At places affected by subsidence the BRO is working to level the road.  The work on the stretch of the highway from Marwadi Chowk to the Narsinh Mandir is being handled by the Public Works Department (PWD). This road is damaged in two spots and the work of repairing has not been started yet. Depending on how the work is executed and the situation in the future, the pilgrims to Badrinath may face inconvenience in visiting the shrine. It should be mentioned here that last year, the road near Narsinh Mandir has subsided which had affected the movement of vehicular traffic to Badrinath during the Yatra season. The PWD had laid tiles on this stretch but this portion has been damaged once again. According to PWD officials, cracks on this stretch of the road are being filled. The walls are damaged on two spots along the road. The estimate for repairing the damage has been prepared and sent to the senior departmental officer concerned. The work on repairing the road will be started as soon as the budget is allocated, said the departmental officials.
