The Vigilance police on Monday out carried out raids on the properties of Charles Nayak, Tehsildar of Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district on the allegations of demand and acceptance of bribe Rs 12 lakh from a person through cheques.
Nayak had demanded the bribe from the complainant to release the land acquisition award of Rs 51,75 lakh in his favour which the latter had got from the NHAI. The Tehsildar demanded the bribe amount in the form of two blank cheques (without name of the payee) of Rs 10 lakh and Rs 2 lakh to release the compensation cheque of the complainant.
Finding no alternative, the complainant handed over two cheques worth Rs 12 lakh to the Tehasildar keeping the name portion blank. The Tehsildar in turn handed over the cheque to his associate one Atthar Alli, a local contractor. Later, Alli presented the cheque to the bank with his name as payee.
The Tehsildar was being examined in connection with the case while Alli was absconding.
This is the first case of bribe Rs 12 lakh by cheque mode and also the highest bribe amount in a case detected by the Vigilance.
