Former MP and senior Congress leader Dr. Ajoy Kumar criticized the BJP's 'One Nation One Election' proposal in a press statement issued on Thursday, labeling it as a potential precursor to a constitutional overhaul by the Modi government. Dr. Kumar accused the BJP of intending to fundamentally alter the Constitution, asserting that the 'One Nation One Election' initiative is the beginning of this process. He emphasized that the threat to the Constitution remains significant and vowed that the Congress would not allow what they see as an attempt to undermine democracy to succeed.
Dr. Kumar highlighted that implementing 'One Nation One Election' would require amendments to several key articles of the Constitution, including Articles 83, 85, 172, 174, and 356. He argued that this plan could potentially diminish the influence of regional parties and centralize electoral power.
According to Dr. Kumar, the concept of 'One Nation One Election' is impractical and primarily serves as a diversionary tactic by the BJP. He claimed that such a proposal undermines the principles of the Constitution and federalism, and suggested that it would be unacceptable to the nation. He raised concerns about the possibility of privatizing election management, questioning whether the BJP might eventually claim an inability to handle elections on a large scale, leading to outsourcing the process. Dr. Kumar concluded by dismissing the 'One Nation One Election' plan as a mere slogan, likening it to other unfulfilled promises of the Modi administration.
